Solving Ontario's Landfill
Capacity Crisis

Ontario is currently facing a crisis in landfill capacity and without immediate action we will run out of capacity within 10 years. The biggest obstacle to increasing capacity is Bill 197, which allows municipalities to veto developments outside of their boundary in an adjacent municipality.

Collaborating for Sustainable and Best-in-Class EPR Programs for all Ontarians

Unlocking the Industry by Working for Workers & Business in Ontario

Continuing Red Tape Reduction to Ensure Ontario Remains Open for Business

Maximizing Resource and Energy Recovery to Strengthen Ontario's Economy

Working with service providers, Ontario has the opportunity to build sustainable and best-in-class EPR programs.

Workers in the waste management and recycling sectors provide an essential service to every community in Ontario, but they do not receive the same support as their counterparts in the skilled trades.

Cumbersome approval processes for waste management and recycling infrastructure have left Ontario at a competitive disadvantage.

More than three quarters of Ontarians agree that the government should invest in technologies that could turn waste into energy according to polling. One of the many examples of energy from waste successes is the renewable natural gas that is used to power truck fleets, which help power our economy.

The City of Timmins is located in Northeastern Ontario on the traditional territory of the Mattagami First Nation. We are home to approximately 42,000 residents across 3,020 square kilometers and known for our strong industrial base in gold mining and forestry.

The City of Timmins Waste Management Department dedicated to waste reduction, collaboration, and resident services while striving to address the unique challenges of Northern Ontario. We remain proactive in navigating the ever-changing waste management landscape by addressing areas such as the Blue Box transition, excess soil management, and landfill gas collection, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability.

Balancing high-level service for residents with our sustainability goals is a cornerstone of our department. Over 90% of residents receive curbside waste collection which is managed and completed in-house. By maintaining reliable waste collection and diversion programs, we ensure that the needs of our community are met without compromising our commitment to the environment.

We continue to explore innovative approaches to biosolids management and seek out technologies that address the complexities of our region’s waste management needs. Through these efforts, we aim to identify creative and practical solutions that reflect the priorities of our community while collaborating with other Northern municipalities. The City of Timmins Waste Management Department remains steadfast in building a resilient system that not only meets today’s needs but also sets a foundation for long-term sustainability.
