About Regional Municipality of Durham
Durham Region is a two-tiered municipality comprised of eight lower-tier municipalities with a combined population of 650,000 spread over 2,500 square kilometres in urban and rural communities. Durham provides residential collections for residual waste, recycling, SSO, batteries, WEEE and porcelain bathroom fixtures in all Area Municipalities except the City of Oshawa and the Town of Whitby where the Region provides only recycling collection services. Additional responsibilities include transfer and haulage operations, disposal, recycling processing and marketing, centralized and backyard composting, MHSW operations, promotion and education programs, policy and planning, energy from waste (EFW) and the perpetual care of six closed landfills. Facilities include a new, state-of-the-art MRF, a new state of the art Energy from Waste facility, three public-drop-off transfer stations with integrated MHSW depots and an additional privately contracted MHSW depot.
